Electric water heaters use one or more heating elements controlled by thermostats. When a component fails, the unit may produce no hot water, only a small amount of hot water or water that is too hot or inconsistent.

Testing and repair
Diagnosis can include the electrical supply, disconnect, wiring, thermostats, elements and safety controls. Electrical testing should be performed with the correct tools and procedures. Do not remove energized access covers or attempt repairs without appropriate training.

A replacement must match the available voltage, circuit, wiring and installation space. The project also includes water connections, pressure-relief discharge, drainage considerations and seismic restraint where required.
Considering a heat-pump water heater
Heat-pump water heaters can reduce electricity use, but they need suitable space, airflow, electrical service and condensate drainage. They also cool and dehumidify the surrounding area while operating. Ask whether the location is appropriate before selecting this technology.
When the tank itself is leaking
Heating elements and thermostats can be replaced, but a leaking storage tank generally cannot be repaired reliably. Shut off power and water when safe and call to discuss replacement.
